EVEN IN SPORTS JUNE 20TH IS ERITREA’S BIGGEST DAY.
From our Archives: June 2013
Many Eritreans gave their lives away to get the independence of this unique nation that the world knows as ERITREA! In order for us Eritreans to maintain our dignity, unity and the special moments that make us somewhat different as a people we should never forget those who sacrificed so much including their lives. In Eritrea and the diaspora today there are many athletes who are slowly reaching international star status in cycling, track and field and soccer, basketball and more. It is to be recalled that the Swedish-Eritrean Star Henok Goitom donated financial support to the martyrs family fund a couple of years ago. However, I would like to take time out to say to the hero of Eritrea, the first athlete to win an Olympic medal for our beloved nation and at the moment the world’s fastest half marathon record holder runner Zeresenay Tadesse that he inspires millions of his fans by his ability as an athlete, however on this year’s occasion of Martyrs day commemoration this great human being has taken the initiative to jump start a huge running event in Eritrea. Those who gave up their lives must be looking down from above and smiling. They are smiling at this modest Eritrean international star for doing what is best and the right thing. I have personally discussed with many others throughout the past few years that a sports event on June 20th would and should be a part of our national holidays. Thank you Zeresenay for your initiative to work out a program in collaboration with the Eritrean sports commission and national federation. Here is the entire interview conducted by Eri-TV with the legend himself, ZERESENAY TADESSSSSSSSE!
