Eritrean-Canadian Johnny Berhanemeskel scores 20 points for his basketball club in Ukraine.
Budivelnyk Kyiv came from behind to produce a strong finish as they defeated Cholet Basket of France in the opening game of the first Leg in the FIBA Europe Cup Quarter-Finals with road triumphs in Italy, this past week. Jerai Grant posted 15 points and 17 rebounds in the win with Bogan Bliznyuk adding 12 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists to fill the statsheet, while the Eritrean-Canadian Johnny Berhanemeskel tops all scorers with 20 points.
Cholet made their move late in the second to build a double-digit cushion at half-time at 50-40. However, the host team recovered with a 14-9 third before taking the lead inside the final four minutes. Justin Patton had the chance to salvage a draw, but could only split a pair of free throws late on. The French club’s top scorer was Dominic Artis with 15 points as Cholet return home for next week to overturn the small deficit. It is to be recalled that Johnny Berhanemeskel made his career in France the past couple of years. Meanwhile, he currently plays for the Ukranian club Budivelnyk Kyiv based in Italy due to the conflict with Russia.
