Badminton is a very ancient sport that some argue started in China but most have concluded that it was invented in India in a version called Poona. Once the British got to learn more about it, the sport caught the attention of many in Europe. In 1887 the Bath Badminton Club in England was formed; it was replaced in 1893 by the Badminton Association of England, which codified the rules that still govern competitive play. Meanwhile, in Eritrea the sport was introduced in the 1970’s. Even though it continued to be played under a different banner by 1991 the sport continued to be played in pockets of the capital city Asmara. In 2004 the official after being organized for 5 years previously the National Badminton Federation of Eritrea was created. Since then many efforts have taken place to help build the sport as it has seen a rise in popularity. It is also to be recalled that a project known as the Shuttle Time project was successfully launched in Eritrea, in 2018 with support from the Sports Commission, the National Olympic Committee, the Ministry of Education, Eritrea Badminton Federation and Badminton Confederation of Africa in collaboration.

Eritrean athletes started to represent their country in regional competitions in men’s & women’s categories at the senior and junior levels. This week in South Africa, Eritrea was represented by Ambassajer Keleta on how to continue to make the Eritrean national programs in particular while also coming up with a strategic plan for the next 4 years. Eri-internationalsports spoke to Ambassajer from South Africa, where he was able to share with us the importance of Eritreans around the world to help support our national program as Eritrea makes strong effort to build a powerful team that can be represented at the continental level and international level including the Olympics in the near future.
