The 2022 World Athletics Championships, being held for the 18th time will be held in Eugene, Oregon starting July 15 and ending on July 24, 2022. This event which had not been held for a couple of years will have 1972 athletes from 192 countries, making it one of the world’s leading sporting events. Eritrea will be represented by 10 athletes, including 3 women and 7 men. The women’s team includes Nazret Woldu who will be running in the women’s marathon. Nazret recently won the Daegu Marathon in South Korea convincingly with a time of 2:21:56. Dolshi Tesfu will represent Eritrea in the 10,000 meter and the current world cross country top runner Rahel Daniel will participate in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. As a bonus for all Eritreans and American Fans, University of New Mexico alumni Eritrean-American Weini Kelati will run in the 5,000 meters.

Meanwhile, in the men’s classifications Eritrea will be represented in three different events. The Marathon team has four up & coming runners, in Filmon Ande, Goitom Kifle, Oqbe Kibrom, & Hiskel Tewolde. The 10,000 meters representative will be Habtom Samuel, the 5000 meters Merhawi Mebrahtu and a top 10 international contender Olympian Yemane Haileselassie in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Eritrea’s athletes have outdone themselves and for a country on the rise in all facets of athletics, the representation is something to be proud of.

Coach Livingston Tuba seems to be doing an excellent job of keeping the team ready at all times. It is to be recalled that the young Eritrean Ghirmay Ghebreslassie took the world by storm as he came into the Beijing stadium with his Eritrean flag in 2015 during the Beijing IAAF World Championships. Eri-international wishes all the Eritrean athletes much success and we shall keep you updated throughout the event.

The championships will be held at the newly renovated University of Oregon Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. With a capacity of 30,000 seats the stadium, which was host to many other big events including the Prefontaine classic where Eri-internationalsports has had the honor of being present a few years ago.
